Oliver Ray

November 8, 1953 — May 11, 2022

Lucky fought hard to win his battle against cancer, but the Lord called him home. Lucky was committed to take care of all his family and friends. His love for his wife Diane was deeply felt and known. Their love for one another is like no other. Lucky’s kids and grandkids are the pride and joy of his life (let’s not forget the ‘67 GTO). He and his siblings had an unconditional love and bond that runs deep. They are what holds the Ray family together and they’ve shown generations the meaning of what family is. Lucky felt strongly about keeping family together no matter what. Often said there wasn't a stranger that Lucky didn't know.

He enjoyed life but wanted others to enjoy it more. He was taught by his daddy Fred Ray how the junk business works and what hard work was. With his one-man truck through so many years and his wife by his side, he created a business that his Daddy and Mama would be so proud of. He worked tirelessly and selflessly so that everyone he loved was cared for. Lucky had a passion for building and creating many beautiful projects. The saying, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure” is no understatement when it came to his values. His creations with his visions amazed everyone. His other passions included hunting with his son and close friends every year in Kentucky and collecting old cars. Lucky is loved by so many and his legacy will live on forever in each and every one who knew him. He will forever be remembered in our hearts.

Lucky is survived by his wife, Diane Susan McGregor Ray, his daughters, Tabitha Lorersch (Patrick) and Sabrina Hartness (Jason), his son, Donald Ray (Kathryn), brothers, Kenneth Ray (Laura), sisters, Patricia Bradley (Rick) and Wanda Wolfenbarger (Cordis), grandchildren, Hunter Wilson, Owen Wilson, Morgan Wilson, Dawson Hartness and Sidney Hartness, Brenden Ray, Hannah Brackett (Caleb), Mason Ray, Benjamin Ray, Sam Owens. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred Edward and Mattie Estelle Taylor Ray, and brothers, Larry Ray, Robert “Buddy” Ray (Rachel), Broadus “Buster” Ray, and Rodger “Doody” Ray.

Visitation will be at 5:30 – 7:30 pm Monday, May 16, 2022 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at the chapel, conducted by The Rev. Chad Ponder. Burial will follow in Springhill Memorial Gardens, 1011 S. Alabama Street, Chesnee, SC 29323.

Lucky served in the United States Marine Corp for four years, where he earned three recognitions: the National Defense Service Medal, Certificate of Commendation, and the Rifle Marksmanship Badge. Military honors will be held at the graveside.

The family of Lucky wishes to extend our sincere thanks to family and friends who helped him through his fight at all hours of the day, for supporting his family whenever needed, and to the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Hospice House Staff and Hospice Home Care Staff.

The family welcomes all to the home of Lucky and Diane after the services May 17, 2022. 410 Lucky Lane, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
