Edwin Essex Elam, Jr., 81, of Spartanburg, SC died Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at Pacifica Senior Living Skylyn. Born in New Orleans, LA, he was the son of the late Edwin Essex Elam Sr. and Jeannette Elam.
Edwin was a retired Quality Control Manager with Hoechst Celanese after 33 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for 49 years, where he was a President of the Parish Council. He was a lay minister of the Eucharist, an Usher, and a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus in the Father Maurice R. Daly Council.
A Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout, he was a leadership trainer in the Palmetto Council for over 20 years. He received the Silver Beaver Award for his distinguished service.
A member of the Spartanburg Audubon Society, he loved flower gardening. He was an avid supporter, member, and teacher at Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen, 3 children, eight grandchildren, one great grandson, and his brother, Dr. Michael Elam.
In celebration of Edwin’s life, a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 2, 2022 in St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Historic Church, 161 N. Dean Street, Spartanburg, SC, 29302, conducted by The Rev. David R. Whitman. A rosary prior to mass will be said at 10:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve, P.O. Box 2337, Spartanburg, SC 29304 or St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church Building Fund, 161 N. Dean Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
