Anne Sanders

March 16, 1938 — October 5, 2021

Anne Evans Argo Sanders, wife of Edward Lorraine “Sandy” Sanders, died from complications of a stroke on October 5, 2021, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Sanders was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 16, 1938, the daughter of Haralson Butler Argo and Dorothy Dean Peck Argo.

Mrs. Sanders graduated from the Academy of Sullins College in Bristol, VA, and Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, where she majored in Art and Art History under August Cook. As a senior at Converse, she represented Spartanburg and her family’s history in cotton in the 1959 Memphis Cotton Carnival as Lady of the Realm.

She served as Vice President and then President of her mother’s business, Argo and Company, Inc., chemical manufacturers. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, SC. Community service was also significant to her. She served on and participated in many boards and organizations, including The Little Theater (where she painted sets and met her husband), The Junior League of Spartanburg (Sustainer of the Year Award, 2010), and Youth Theater (past President). She also served on or was a member of the Wednesday Study Club, Friends of the Arts (past President), Women’s Giving, Converse (past Class Representative and 1950s Decade Representative on the Alumni Board, Theater Patron), Ballet Guild, The Debutante Club, Art Association, and Spartanburg Development Council.

She was an outstanding role model of a woman in business and the community to her daughter, granddaughter, and many others. Fortunately, she also passed her art and design expertise to her granddaughter.

In addition to her beloved husband, she is survived by her daughter, Lorraine Sanders Way (Winston Winfield Way, Jr.), and her granddaughter, Elizabeth Lorraine Way.

The family continues to be so appreciative of her longtime house manager and friend, Patty Guy, and her exceptional Comfort Keepers caregivers and friends, Deborah Saunders-Black, Ashaki Jerels, and Mary Fuller.

A Graveside service will be 2:00 PM Friday, October 15, 2021 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by The Rev. Joanne R. Hull.
