Wistar Gustave "Gus" Metz

July 30, 1936 — December 22, 2025

Spartanburg

Wistar Gustave "Gus" Metz passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025. The son of Gustave Ernst and Evelyn Daniel Metz and the grandson of David Wistar Daniel, he was born in Greenville, SC on July 30, 1936.

Gus grew up in Clemson, graduating from Clemson College with a degree in electrical engineering. He then earned his master’s degree in industrial management from MIT. After completing his education, Gus moved to New York City where he was employed for two years as a private investigator at Dun & Bradstreet. He joined Milliken & Co., where he worked for over 40 years. A proponent of education, he taught computer science night courses at USC Upstate for many years. He was married to Joanne Currier Metz for 63 years.

Gus was involved in serving his community. He was a member of Rotary for 50 years and helped to organize the North Spartanburg club. He became well known for his humor through the popularity of his "Rotary jokes". Gus served for ten years on the board of the Senior Centers of Spartanburg County, with four of those years as board chair. He volunteered for Spartanburg mobile meals for several years. A lifelong Anglican, Gus used his gifts of fixing things and organization to serve many churches during his lifetime, including Trinity Church in Boston, St. Christopher's Church and All Saint's Church in Spartanburg. He could most often be seen running the sound system, doing projects at St. Christopher's, and setting up bells to support his wife's work as a handbell director.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joanne; his children and their spouses: Catharine and Thomas Monaghan, David and Angela Metz, and Andrew and Stacy Metz; and his grandchildren Kevin, Meredith, Christopher, and Ethan.

The Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main St, Spartanburg, SC, 29307. The family will receive friends during reception following the service at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel. A private interment will be held for the family.
