William Lundy

April 4, 1931 — February 14, 2022

William “Allen” Lundy, 90, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away Monday, February 14, 2022, from complications of diabetes. Born April 4, 1931, and raised in Statesville, NC, he was the son of the late William Parks Lundy and Mary Leigh Shaw Lundy, and the husband of Merle Morgan Lundy for 62 years.

He was a member of the former Oak Grove Baptist Church and most recently attended Church at The Mill in Moore. He retired from the finance business, having been the owner of Palmetto and Allen Finance companies in Spartanburg for more than 50 years, along with finance companies in Chesnee, Landrum and Union during the 1960’s and 1970’s.

He was a Shriner and member of the Hejaz Temple Lodge No. 70, member of the Independent Consumer Finance Association, the Foothills Antique Power Association, the Spartanburg Touchdown Club, and a life member of the Family Motor Coach Association.

Allen and Merle enjoyed spending summers at Lake Bowen and traveling by motorhome with family and friends to nearly all 50 states. He especially enjoyed camping at Myrtle Beach and Mt. Pisgah, NC, where eating salmon stew made in a black cast iron pot became a tradition. He was an avid fan of NASCAR, along with Wofford and Clemson football, attending games for more than 25 years.

Allen was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who always enjoyed having family visit and never failed to say, “Don’t rush,” when you left, whether you had been there for 2 hours or 2 days.

Along with his wife, Merle, he is survived by three daughters, Karen Wurst (James) of Anderson, SC, Ginger McCarver (Thomas) of Moore, SC, and Caroline Vaughn of Charlotte, NC; six grandchildren, Trey Wurst (Laura) of Charleston, SC, Daniel Wurst of Seneca, SC, Morgan McCarver of Asheville, NC, Leigh Marie McCarver of Moore, SC, Allen Vaughn and Anne Lee Vaughn of Charlotte, NC; two great-grandchildren, Madeline Wurst and Gabriel Wurst; one sister, Betty Eidson (Allan) of Mansfield, TX; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Annabelle Elliott of Statesville, NC, and Dorcas Wooten of Newton, NC; and son-in-law, Stevenson Marchant Vaughn of Charlotte, NC.

A private service will be held for the family on Saturday, February 19, 2022 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by The Rev. Dr. D. J. Horton.
