Wanda Mitchell

Wanda Jean (Sumpter) Mitchell, 86, of Wellford, SC, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2017 in Wellford, South Carolina after a long illness. She was born on November 12, 1931 in Garden City in Finney County, Kansas, to David Asa and Ada Della (Roy) Sumpter. She grew up in Wichita, Kansas. After graduating from Central High School, Wanda completed nurses training at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She lived in Garden City, Kansas; Wichita, Kansas; Casablanca, Morocco; San Antonio, Texas; Ziegler, Illinois; El Dorado, Kansas; North Little Rock, Arkansas; Cabot, Arkansas; Austin, Texas; Woodland Shores near Afton, Oklahoma; and Wellford, South Carolina. Wanda spent most of her adult life devoted to the care of others working as a registered nurse. She nursed her parents for nine years after their health failed. She took great pleasure spending time with beloved family members who lived all over the country. She was always ready to help neighbors, family, friends and strangers. She volunteered with various organizations including the American Heart Association, the Red Cross, the Veterans Administration Hospital in North Little Rock, and as a Girl Scout Leader. Wanda enjoyed rollerskating, watching birds, gardening and growing potted plants, especially cactus. She is survived by her children: Barbara (Mitchell) Cole of Seattle, Washington; Ronald Eugene Mitchell of Langley, Oklahoma; Vickie Lynn (Mitchell) Branson of Marble, Colorado; David Charles Mitchell of Wellford, South Carolina; Della Jean (Mitchell) Cole of Lonsdale, Arkansas; her sister, Carol Sue (Sumpter) Hirsh of Wichita, Kansas; her sister-in-law, Lois Sumpter of Wichita, Kansas; brother-in-law, Gene Hirsh of Wichita, Kansas; sister-in-law, Doris Myers of Paducah, Kentucky; granddaughters, April Cole, Melissa Williams and husband Eric, Angela Webber and husband Charles, Rebecca Branson, Lindsay (Branson) Sottong and husband Chris, Kelly (Branson) Leach and husband David, Sarah Richardson and husband BJ; grandsons, Ronald E. Mitchell, David Cole, Justico Mitchell and wife Megan, Robert Mitchell and wife Shannon, John Adam Shaw, and Ronald A Mitchell; great-granddaughters, Abigail Cole, Taylor Perry, Devin Gregory, Sydney Johnson, Destiny Shaw, Breanna Mitchell, Layla Mitchell, Anne Claire Richardson, Julie Richardson, Katherine Webber, Lorelei Shaw; and great-grandsons, Evan Johnson, Charles Mitchell, Terry Logan Mitchell, Charles Webber IV, Dalton Leach and Clint Shaw, and Abel Mitchell. Ms. Mitchell was preceded in death by her parents, David Asa and Ada Sumpter of Wichita, Kansas; her husband, Roy Edmund Mitchell; her brother, David LeRoy Sumpter; and her son, Terry Allen Mitchell. Wanda was a devoted Christian her whole life long. A service honoring her memory will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 30, 2017 in the chapel at College Hill United Methodist Church, 2930 East 1st Street N, Wichita, KS 67214.
