Virginia Riehle New, 99, of Spartanburg, SC, died Saturday, February 20, 2016, at Hospice Atlanta at Emory University Hospital. Born November 7, 1916, in San Diego, CA, she was the daughter of the late Frank Amand Riehle and Laura Higgins Riehle and the widow of Alfred Gerry New. Mrs. New was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and the St. Cecilia Circle. She was a community volunteer for over 40 years, sharing her generosity with her church, friends, and family. She was known for over 30 years for having a passion for growing beautiful roses. She also loved entertaining and even at 99 she continued to enjoy social events. A graduate of San Diego State University, she was a member of the Mortar Board. She was also a former member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross, United Fund, Palmetto Council of Girl Scouts, Art Association of Spartanburg, Spartanburg Mental Health, Spartanburg Little Theatre, and Board of Trustees of Spartanburg Day School. Virginia was also a charter member of Mary Black Hospital Auxiliary with over 4,000 volunteer hours and appointed Board Member Emeritus, Board of Directors of Ellen Hines Smith Girls' Home for over 25 years, Ballet Guild Board of Directors, and Friends of the Arts Board of Directors. Surviving are daughters, Margaret New Spencer (William) of Decatur, GA and Ann Newsmith (Norm Oakes) of Brattleboro, VT; son, Alfred G. New Jr. (Cristina) of Brattleboro, VT; grandchildren, Laura New, Elliott New, Alyssa Newsmith, Elena Newsmith, Eleanor Spencer, and John Patrick Healy; step-grandsons, Matthew Oakes and Stephen Oakes; great-granddaughter, Brooke LaFlam; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Robert A. Riehle and Frank Riehle. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM, Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 AM Friday, March 4, 2016, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, by the Rev. David R. Whitman and the Rev. Mr. Robert L. Mahaffey. A reception will follow in the Parish Center. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1901 Wade Hampton Rd., Greenville, SC 29615. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 290 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302; or a charity of one's choice. The family is at their respective homes.
