Tommy William Read, known as "Tom", passed away on December 1, 2024, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at the age of 83. He was born on August 4, 1941, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina to the late Aaron C. and Juanita C. Read.
Tom's professional journey led him to a fulfilling career as a manager with IBM, where he exemplified leadership and commitment. His educational background includes a degree from Wofford College, which set the foundation for his accomplishments in the business world.
A man of vibrant personality, Tom was known for never having met a stranger. He talked to everyone and enjoyed forming friendships wherever he went, especially in Warrenton, Virginia, and in Spartanburg. His engaging nature created a wide circle of good friends who can attest to the kindness and joy he brought to their lives.
In addition to his professional achievements, Tom proudly served in the United States Army. This experience instilled in him a sense of discipline and respect that carried through all aspects of his life.
Tom was passionate about many interests outside of work. He loved to fish and dedicated time to reading, often keeping a detailed journal of all the books he consumed. Additionally, he was an accomplished master craftsman; he had a great skill with woodworking, and he had a vast collection of tools that he utilized for various projects around the homes of friends and family. His hands-on approach to life, combined with his sharp intellect and creativity, left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Tom is survived by his stepdaughters, Wanda Clippard and Carol Clippard, both of Spartanburg, SC; his cousin, Judy Carter (Kenneth) of Boiling Springs; and his best friend, Melrose Smith, III (Erreeyal) of Spartanburg; as well as a number of cousins including Judy West Carter (Kenneth) of Boiling Springs and Joyce West Veytia (Ralph) of Spartanburg. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents and his devoted wife, Helen Carroll Read.
A graveside service to honor Tommy William Read will take place at 12:00 pm, Saturday, December 7, 2024, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood Glendale Road, Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Tom's vibrant spirit and unfailing kindness will be profoundly missed by all who were touched by his presence. His memory will continue to live on through the countless stories and shared moments held dearly by his family and friends.
