Susan Cass Griswold, Ph.D., 83, of Spartanburg, passed away on Sunday morning, November 3, 2024, at her home. Susan was born on May 21, 1941, in Evanston, IL, a daughter of the late Margaret Crouse Eichelberger and Robert S. Eichelberger. She was married to the late John Gillespie Morton.
Susan received her Bachelor of Arts degree from University of North Carolina-Greensboro and earned her Ph.D. degree from Vanderbilt University. She was the Foreign Languages Department Chair and professor of Spanish at Wofford College from 1980 until her retirement in 2009. At Wofford, she helped modernize the teaching of foreign languages and strongly supported expanding studies abroad.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spartanburg.
Dr. Griswold is survived by her brother, Robert N. Griswold, her niece, Amelia G. Varner, her cousins, Alexander B. Gaguine and John Gaguine, her stepdaughters, Bethany Gail Morton and Lillian Nell Morton, and her beloved cats, Colby and Mo.
A service to honor Susan’s life and memory will be planned for a later date.
