Stephen Lee Johnson, born on March 23, 1964, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, peacefully passed away on September 16, 2024 in Inman, South Carolina, at the age of 60. He was the son of the late Russell Lee Johnson and Shirley Sue McConnell Johnson.
Stephen was known for his remarkable love of gardening. He possessed a unique talent for nurturing beautiful vegetables and flowers, cultivating his garden with patience and love. This passion extended beyond mere hobby; it became a way for him to connect with family and neighbors alike, sharing the bounties of his hard work. His ability to inspire others through his dedication to gardening instilled valuable lessons about the importance of nurturing and patience in everyday life.
In his younger years, Stephen enjoyed the idyllic days spent camping, surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors. However, after sustaining a back injury, he found solace primarily in his gardening endeavors, where he could engage with nature at a gentler pace.
Stephen is survived by his uncle, Edward "Butch" McConnell; his aunt, Lona Mauney; his nieces, Amber Hayes and Taylor Mosa; and his nephews, Stephen Johnson and Tyler Mosa. He leaves behind a large extended family, filled with cousins and great nieces and nephews, who will carry forward his memory and passions. But his fur baby and devoted friend, Gypsy Rose will mourn his loss deeply.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Russell Lee and Shirley McConnell Johnson; his sister, Debbie Mosa; and his brother, Mark Johnson. Their absence is felt deeply, yet the legacy of love, gardening, and nature that Stephen leaves behind is an enduring gift to those who knew him.
A graveside service in Stephen's honor will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Thompson Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, located at 990 Thompson Chapel Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate the life of a man who touched the hearts of many.
