Shirley Fred McCray, 91, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, entered his Heavenly Home on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.
Fred, as he was affectionately known, was born in Savannah, Georgia, the son of the late Robert Ashley McCray and the late Thelma Angeline Stone McCray. He was also preceded in death by a son: Brian Wilfred McCray; and a brother: Edwin Ashley McCray.
Fred served his country with honor in the United States Navy serving aboard the USS Greenwich Bay. He was a North Carolina State graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He retired from Lockwood Green, where he had a successful career. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Spartanburg where he volunteered with The Encouraging Word and the Alight Ministry. He valued God, family, and then country. He was also a Lion's Club Member. He had traveled to 170 countries and loved to travel. He enjoyed playing dominos, finding bargains at yard sales and flea markets. He loved ice-cream and NC State Football- “Go Wolfpack”. He also loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish Fred’s wonderful memories are his wife of 66 years: Mavene Parker McCray; son: Robert Ashley McCray II(Donna); his daughter: Jan McCray Coffin (Mark); two granddaughters: Turner Davis and Kyndall Davis Sigrist (Connor): one great grandson: Cameron Sigrist.
A funeral service to honor Fred’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. The entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens – Heritage Chapel Mausoleum with Navy Military Honors. Rev. Sal Barone, Rev. Alan Bagwell, and Rev. Brian Redding will be officiating the services.
Fred’s memories will continue to live in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for memorial contributions made in Fred’s memory to Alight Ministries at First Baptist Church of Spartanburg.
