Obituary

Samuel Alexander Brown, Jr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated public servant, passed away on February 25, 2026, in Acworth, Georgia. Sam was born on January 5, 1944, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the son of the late Samuel A. Brown, Sr. and Ethel Savage Brown.

Sam dedicated 27 years to the U.S. Army, retiring in 1992 at the rank of Colonel. His tenure as an officer in the Medical Service Corps was marked by his unwavering commitment to service, resilience, and leadership. After retirement, he continued his service to the Army in a civilian capacity working alongside the Medical Corps Soldiers he had trained and mentored to carry the torch of leadership.

As passionate learner, Sam obtained several degrees to enrich his professional journey. Starting with a high school diploma from Spartanburg High School in 1962, he went on to attend Wofford College in Spartanburg, graduating in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree. He later earned two master’s degrees, one in Hospital Administration from Baylor University in Texas, and one in Public Administration from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. Sam is also a 1988 graduate of the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.

Beyond his noteworthy military career, Sam was deeply committed to his family and his community. He was known for his love of teaching, particularly as a Sunday School teacher at his church, where his passion for sharing knowledge was evident. His dedication to family was paramount; he always sought to succeed for their benefit, prioritizing their well-being above all else. His hobbies reflected his diverse interests; he played the piano, enjoyed a chess game with family, working on home improvement projects, and could often be found enjoying a good book on history.

Sam is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret (Meg) Dowling Brown of Acworth, GA, and his three children; Alex Brown (Marysha) of Hephzibah, GA; Meredith Brown (Greg Sherlin) of Columbia, SC; and Gregory Brown (Beth Belton) of Durham, NC. He took great pride in his grandchildren—Ashley, Anna, Emily, and Erin—and welcomed his step-granddaughter, Kally Sherlin. Sam's legacy also includes numerous extended family members.

Sam will be entombed with Military Honors at the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood Glendale Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29307. For information on services, please contact Alex Brown at s.alex.brown@gmail.com.

Though Sam has departed from this world, his influence, teachings, and love will remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His commitment to his family, community, and country leaves behind a profound legacy of kindness and service.
