Ruby Upton

Ruby Lee Upton, 96, of Spartanburg, SC, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born August 24, 1919, in Cherokee County, SC, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Edith Mae Emory Cowart and wife, for 69 years, of the late James Henry Upton. Mrs. Upton enjoyed cooking and gardening and retired as a seamstress from Spartanburg Sportswear. She was the oldest member of Central Baptist Church and taught the Golden Circle Sunday School Class. Survivors include four children, Jeanette Childress of Spartanburg, SC, Carroll Upton (Mary) of Buffalo, SC, Barbara Burrell of Spartanburg, SC, and Rev. Jimmy Upton (Miriam) of Marion, NC; 9 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; 1 great-great-grandson; sister, Pauline Johnson of Greenville, SC; and special pet "Daisy". In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Audrey Goode, Lucille Templeton, and Lois Scruggs; brother, Bill Cowart; and a grandson. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at Central Baptist Church, 126 E. Church St., Cowpens, SC 29330, by the Rev. Jimmy Upton and the Rev. Allen Dean Blanton. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family is at the home of Ruby Upton.
