Roy Seay, Sr.

Roy Calvin Seay, Sr., 85, of Reed Road, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at his home. Born February 2, 1924, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Weldon Grady and Nina Victoria Cannon Seay. He was a retired Chief Petty Officer from the U.S. Navy and a Veteran of World War II. He retired with a GS-17 ranking from the Civil Service. He followed his father as manager of Flatwood Farms in Spartanburg County. Later he retired from W. R. Grace, Cryovac, in Simpsonville, SC. A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, he was a former Bishop in Norfolk, VA, a Branch President in Union, SC, and a High Councilor. He and his wife served a church welfare mission in Columbia, SC, and managed the Bishops' Storehouse there. Together, they also served in the Family History Center in Greenville, SC. Many families remember him for his loving service as a Home Teacher. He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Evelyn Poteat Seay. Other survivors include four daughters, Carol Dean Williams and her husband L. Jay of Salt Lake City, UT, Mary Jacqueline Wilson and her husband Terry D. of Yucaipa, CA; Nancy Jo Cooley and her husband Wayne J. of Signal Mountain, TN, and Candace Chapman of Spartanburg; two sons, Roy Calvin Seay, Jr. and his wife Starr W. of Spartanburg, and Bob Poteat Seay and his wife Norma Y. of Lawrenceville, GA; four brothers, Osborne, Lector, Henry, and Dennis Seay, all of Spartanburg; three sisters, Dorothy Mathis, Willyne Coggins, and Agnes Horton, all of Spartanburg; thirty-six grandchildren; and sixty-two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Weldon Seay and Rev. Donald Seay. Visitation will be 3:00-3:45 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 p.m. at the Chapel conducted by Bishop Len Fletcher and John A. Stephenson, IV. Burial with full military rites will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
