Spartanburg

Ronald “Ronnie” Nelson Hewitt, 86, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025. Born on September 11, 1938, in Clifton, South Carolina Ronald spent his entire life in the Spartanburg area. He was proudly rooted in the same area where he was raised.

Ronnie was married for 65 years to the love of his life, Patricia "Pat" Easler Hewitt, lovingly known to him as “Missy”. Their marriage was one of deep devotion, laughter, and enduring love. He not only adored her, but also her cooking, especially her fried potatoes in fatback. He never missed an opportunity to let others know just how blessed he was. When she left a room, his eyes followed as he always wanted her near.

Ronnie's wife was his greatest pride and joy along with their three children. His daughter, Linda Nicholls (Steven “Gary”), lovingly known to him as “baby girl”, could always bring a smile to his face with just a word. He cherished their bond and protected it fiercely. With his two sons, David Hewitt (Christie) and Darren Hewitt (Traci), laughter was never far behind—whether they were teasing each other or teaming up to tease him, their playful banter was a constant reminder of the deep love they shared. His pride in all three of them was evident in every story he told, every hug he gave, and every quiet moment of gratitude for the family he helped build.

Ronnie’s legacy lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Jeremy Johnson (Michelle), Ashley Newton (Brad), Skylar Herdinar (Rocky), Jamey Cheatwood (fiancée Alex), Spencer Hewitt, Allyssa Hewitt, Brantley Hewitt (fiancée Mary Carson Dowis), Riley Drake (Nathaniel), and Seth Hewitt. Nothing made him prouder than watching them grow and build families of their own. He was blessed with great-grandchildren who brought light and laughter to his later years: Blaine, Parker, Rylie, Claire, and Skylar; Brayden, Brooks, and Briggs; Savannah and Camryn; Talia; and Sofia. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mattie Lee Trexler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Belton and Irene Hewitt; his sisters, Margie Watson, Betty Kelley and Mattie Thornton and his brother, Gary.

Ronnie retired from Spartanburg County and went on to work in IT at USC Upstate to continue doing what he loved. A founding member of Peach Valley Baptist Church, Ronnie was an active member for 50 years. His faith was in Jesus Christ and he lived with integrity, grit, and a deep devotion for those around him.

He was known for his love of classic cars, Sunday afternoon NASCAR races, and westerns. Gifted for working with his hands, he could often be found under the hood of a car or fixing something around the house. He was also an avid sports fan — always up for a good game — and had a special passion for boxing. Ronnie was strong and spirited; he was especially famous among his grandchildren for arm wrestling, performing his human flag trick and flexing his muscles to make them smile.

Ronnie's strong exterior was softened by his piercing blue eyes. You could always curl up beside him on the couch and watch a movie or race, knowing you were deeply loved; he embraced the simple joys of life, cherished long card games, checkers, and loud moments with his family.

Family will receive friends from 9:30 am to 10:45 am, Saturday, July 26, 2025, Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC, 29307.
