It is with deep love that we announce the passing of Roberta Ann Justice, a woman whose compassion, quiet strength, and enduring kindness touched the lives of those who truly knew her. Roberta was born on August 28, 1955, in the mountains of West Virginia and passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on May 30, 2026, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, surrounded by her daughter Esther-Irene, son-in-law Matthew, and her cherished grandson.
From her earliest years, Roberta carried with her a deep connection to the Appalachian spirit and a love for community and service. Her family later moved to New Jersey before settling in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where her father served as the Boy Scout Executive. Watching his dedication to others helped shape Roberta’s own desire to encourage, teach, and care for those around her.
This calling to serve others became the foundation of her life. She worked as a substitute teacher and later continued her work at the Charles Lea Center and the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind, following in the footsteps of her aunts, Esther and Irene, who had dedicated their lives to education. Roberta believed deeply that every individual—regardless of mental health or circumstance—deserved patience, encouragement, and the opportunity to succeed.
Throughout her life, she was a caregiver at heart, stepping in wherever she was needed to support grandparents, aunts, and loved ones with steady compassion. While she was not always fully seen or recognized for who she was, those closest to her knew her deep empathy, loyalty, and love. She saw goodness in people, welcomed others without judgment, and continued to give of herself even in the face of life’s challenges.
Roberta’s life was defined by service, perseverance, compassion, and unconditional love. Though her voice was often quiet, the way she cared for others will leave a lasting impact for generations.
She is also survived by her younger brother, Stephen, and was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Patricia Justice.
A service to honor and celebrate Roberta’s life will be held at Highland Memory Gardens in Chapmanville, West Virginia, on June 8, 2026, at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Roberta’s memory to Prince of Peace Catholic Church (1209 Brushy Creek Road, Taylors, SC 29687) or Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home (PO Box 2624, Spartanburg, SC 29304). We encourage you to honor her legacy of teaching and caring for others through these contributions.
