Robert Hett Chapman III, 66, of Spartanburg passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Harrison Shackelford Chapman and Robert Hett Chapman Jr. He was a graduate of Spartanburg Day School, University of the South, Institute of Textile Technology, Harvard Business School and National Cotton Council. After college he worked for three years for C&S Bank in Columbia, SC where he met his wife. They moved to Spartanburg in 1976 when he joined Inman Mills, where his passion was for the mill family, customers, and the entire textile industry for the past 41 years. He was serving as Chairman, Chief Executive Officer & Treasurer at the time of his death. Rob tirelessly gave his life to the benefit of his family, friends and communities. His dedication was present in everything he did and everyone that he touched throughout his entire life. Through his presence, he always showed people he genuinely cared. He served on the boards and in numerous leadership positions for countless organizations, including currently on the board of Inman Mills, YMCA of Greater Spartanburg, Linville Resorts, Sage Automotive Interiors, Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Foundation and National Council of Textile Organization. He was a past member of the boards of Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, New York Cotton Exchange, The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg, Spartanburg County Foundation, United Way of the Piedmont, Carolina Golf Association, American Textile Manufacturers Institute, South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance, Advance America, Converse College, Bumper2Bumper Media, Tuscarora Yarns, FabTech Industries, Spartan Communications, South Carolina Independent Colleges & Universities, Spartanburg Arts Council, South Carolina Technical College System Foundation, Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, Bank of America Local Advisory Board and J.E. Sirrine Foundation. He was a 2016 Laureate into the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame and was honored to be a member of the University of the South Athletic Hall of Fame. Surviving are his wife, Lacy Dennis Chapman; daughter, Dennis Chapman Hughes (Brian) of Spartanburg; daughter, Jane Harrison Chapman Fisher (Ellis) of Greenville; four grandchildren, Chapman and Carter Hughes, Lacy and Mary McKinnon Fisher; brother, John Shackelford Chapman (Lisa); and sister, Sarah Chapman Jackson; and three nieces and nephews, all of Spartanburg. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, August 25, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302, by the Rev. Dr. Thomas Evans and the Rev. Joanne Hull.
