Richard Graves Cain, 90, of Spartanburg, SC, entered into eternal rest on September 27, 2024, after a brief illness. Mr. Cain was born in Jackson, Tennessee on July 30, 1934, to the late J.N. Cain and Ada Bell Replogle Cain. He grew up in Memphis, TN, and graduated from Humes High School in 1952. He was a veteran of the United States Army, and member of the American Legion Post #28. He was a graduate of Memphis State University, where he also received his Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology. He served as the Director of Clinical Services at the Charles Lea Center for more than thirty years. He was a devoted family man, and dedicated his life to serving, encouraging, teaching and nurturing others. He served as Troop Leader for the Boy Scouts of America in both Memphis and Spartanburg, earning the prestigious Wood Badge Certification. He was a member of the Sertoma club of Spartanburg and worked closely with the United Way of the Piedmont. He also served as an Associate Professor of Psychology for The University of South Carolina, teaching at the Spartanburg Campus. Mr. Cain had various interests and hobbies throughout his life, including camping, golfing, water skiing, and bass fishing. He was an avid music lover and enjoyed playing banjo and piano.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Barbara Ives Cain, as well as two children, Karen Kay Cain Harrison and Richard Randall Cain; three brothers, Neal Cain, J.N. Cain, Jr., and Rawley Cain; and one sister, Rachel Cain Boydston.
He is survived by two brothers, Stennis Cain (Betty) of Memphis, TN, and Marcus Cain (Linda) of Hernando Mississippi; one son, Stephen Graves Cain (Kimberley) of Aiken, SC, and one daughter, Patricia Cain Miller (Robert) of Gaffney, SC, as well as a granddaughter, Michelle Harrison Schell of Spartanburg, two grandsons, Dayne Miller (Shae) of Inman and Andrew Miller (Brittany) of Campobello. Also surviving are nine great grandchildren; Blake, Bailey, Avery, and Anna Claire Transiskus, Tommy Washington, Jr., and Kyleigh, Matthew, Jameison and Amberleigh Miller; and one great-great-grand daughter, Alayjah Washington. He was adoringly known as “Pop” not to only his own family, but to the extended families and friends of his children and grandchildren.
Mr. Cain was of the Baptist faith, a member of Green Point Baptist Church, and is deserving of credit for helping raise the Pastor, Dr. David Lancaster, whom he loved like one of his own.
He enriched every life he touched and did his Boy Scout best to leave the world a better place than he found it.
A visitation will be held from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm on Friday, October 4, 2024, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am, October 5, 2024, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road., Spartanburg SC 29307, conducted by the Rev. Dr. David Lancaster.
Pallbearers will be Blake Transiskus, Avery Transiskus, Dayne Miller, Andrew Miller, Chase Puckett, and Jackson Miller.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303, Green Point Baptist Church, 13941 Rainbow Lake Road, Inman SC 29349, or the American Legion Post #28, Duncan Park, 94 West Park Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
