Rebecca Lou Jones (Dirting) departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at the age of 79. Born on September 30, 1946, in Dayton, Ohio, she brought to her years a resonant grace and a deep devotion to family, music, and the quiet enrichment of those around her.
Rebecca’s journey began as the cherished daughter of Leland and Frances Dirting, whose memories now reside with her in the enduring tapestry of love. She grew up in an environment filled with warmth, learning, and encouragement and foundations that would deeply shape her character and the choices she made throughout her remarkable life. Her pursuit of knowledge and passion for the arts led her to Texas Christian University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in music education in 1968—setting the stage for a lifelong commitment to sharing the gift of music.
Rebecca’s legacy as an educator is indelibly etched upon the hearts of many. As a cello and piano teacher in both public schools and private settings, she nurtured an entire generation’s understanding and appreciation of music. Her students remember her not only for her technical prowess but also for her patience, kindness, and gentle guidance—qualities that elevated every lesson. Later, Rebecca found a second professional home at Wofford College, where she dedicated over two decades of devoted service as Periodicals Manager. Among the campus community, she was respected not only for her meticulous stewardship but also for her warmth and collegial spirit.
Yet among all her achievements, Rebecca found her greatest pride and joy in her family. She was a beloved wife to Neill Jones, whose unwavering partnership was the cornerstone of her days. Rebecca found immense fulfillment in motherhood to her daughters, Amber Hicks and Allison Slade, inspiring their lives with her unwavering support and steadfast love. Her guidance did not end with her daughters, she joyfully extended her wisdom to her grandchildren: Caleb, Joshua, Raegan, Esther, Elena, and Luke, whose hearts and minds she opened to the wonders of music. Teaching her grandchildren to love music stands as one of Rebecca’s proudest accomplishments, a gift that continues to echo in every note they play. It was because of her; a very rich musical gift will be passed on through her grandchildren. She shared her musical talents with all she met.
Rebecca’s affection also encompassed her siblings, Ric Dirting (Becky), Jim Dirting (Susan), and Linda Leavenworth, for whom she was a source of steadfast comfort and familial bond. In her presence, each family gathering was illuminated with laughter, music, and the gentle assurance of her love.
Rebecca is predeceased both by her loving parents, Leland and Frances Dirting, whose legacy of kindness and integrity she so faithfully upheld, and her first born daughter, Leslie Noelle, who died at childbirth.
To all who knew Rebecca, her memory conjures images of quiet resilience, generosity of spirit, and an abiding devotion to those she held dear. She leaves behind a legacy not only in the notes of the music she so beautifully shared but also in the character and accomplishments of those she nurtured and loved.
A Graveside Service to honor and celebrate Rebecca’s life will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg on Saturday, July 18, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Robert Mitchell officiating.
The song of Rebecca’s life will continue to play in the hearts of all she touched—a timeless melody of love, compassion, and the enduring power of family.
In lieu of flowers, Rebecca's family would prefer donations made in her honor to help support Music Education for underprivileged children at savethemusic.org.
