Ralph Gillespie a public servant in Spartanburg, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the age of 97.
Ralph was born in Walhalla, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Major Toccoa Gillespie and the late Inez Rowland. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years: Rosalina “Lena” Brandt Gillespie; two daughters: Millie and Pamela Lynn Gillespie; two sisters: Evelyn Winkler and Maxine May; and one brother: Ray Gillespie.
In 1965 Ralph became the first president of the Milliken Industrial Division where he formed many everlasting friendships before his retirement. After his retirement in 1989, the weaving plant in Union, South Carolina was renamed in his honor. He also was committed to excellence in business, education, and the well-being of his community. He served as past chairman of the Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, Holy Communion Lutheran Church Building Committee during all 4 phases, USC Upstate Board, Board of the Business School of USC, and past chairman of the Spartanburg Board of Education.
In his spare time, you could find him at his lake home on Lake Lanier. He also found relaxation working in his yard and cutting the lawn. He enjoyed his daily newspaper and spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Left to cherish Ralph’s many memories are his two sons and daughters-in-law: Michael and Carey Gillespie, and Maxwell and Belinda Gillespie; one daughter and son-in-law: Portia and Steve Walker. Seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive.
The family will receive friends between 1:00 and 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Holy Communion Lutheran Church, 1430 John B White Sr BLVD, Spartanburg, SC 29306. The funeral service to honor Mr. Ralph Gillespie’s life will begin at 2:00 PM following the visitation. Reverend Allen Kinsley will be officiating the service. He will be laid to rest beside his late wife Rosalina in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Ralphs memories will continue to live in the hearts of everyone that had the pleasure of meeting him.
