Patty Turner

Patty Bland Turner, formerly of 130 Spring Valley Dr., Spartanburg, passed from this world on Wednesday June 23rd, 2022.

Widow of Spartanburg attorney, judge and state legislator James R. Turner, Patty was once a telephone operator for AT&T. She is survived by her son Richard C. Turner (Kathy) of Arlington, Virginia, three grandsons, Cameron John Turner of Denver, Colorado, Hamilton James Turner of Casablanca, Morocco and Miles Emory Turner of Arlington Virginia, and a granddaughter, Mikayla Ihilani Turner of Richmond Virginia.

Patty was born September 25, 1925 in Rutherford County, North Carolina to the late Rucker Volney and Minerva Cantrell Bland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James, her son James Robert Turner Jr., and her siblings Claude Reid Bland, Thelma Bland Page, Foye Bland Deaton, Gladys Lee Bland Champion, Rucker Volney Bland Jr. and Lois Crane. She is also survived by sisters in law Sara T. Hughey of Spartanburg, Eleanor T. Horne of Beaufort, Mary Louise Gaines (Ted) of Greenville, Elaine T. Leonard (Carl) of Moore and Barbara Cathcart Mosley (John) of Lyman. Brothers in law John Vester Turner Sr., David Edge, Cecil Hughey, Joe Horne, Ralph Cathcart, and Elbert Strong, and by sisters in law Ruby Strong, Vera T. Edge and Betty E. Turner.

Patty was a member of Bethel Methodist Church in Spartanburg. She and her husband were socially very active, helping found the Nocturne Club. She was a competitive bridge player, and a loyal Gamecocks fan. She traveled extensively, including to Japan, New Zealand, England, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Thailand, Australia, Tahiti, Greece, Russia and many other lands.

Her family bids her farewell on her final journey. Services will be held on July 2, 2022 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St. in Spartanburg. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, followed by Patty’s funeral service conducted by The Rev. Dr. Kim Strong. The family will be at Patty’s former home.
