Obituary

Patricia Ann “PattyAnn” Garst Hevener passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, June 26, 2026.

Born on March 22, 1949, in Roanoke, Virginia, PattyAnn was the daughter of the late Wallace Benjamin Garst and Trilby Ann Meador Garst.

She will be remembered for her bright, encouraging smile, infectious laughter, unwavering desire to bring joy to others, deep faith, and steadfast devotion to every branch of her family.

PattyAnn's love of music began at an early age and remained the defining passion of her life. She pursued her musical education at William & Mary and Hollins College before earning her Master of Music in Voice from Converse College. She taught introductory music courses before raising her children and later returned to teaching as a voice instructor, providing college preparatory voice lessons while her sons attended college.

A gifted soprano, PattyAnn was a founding member and frequent performer with the Spartanburg Repertory Company. She also served as President of the Spartanburg Philharmonic Music Club from 1987 to 1989 and performed as a soloist with the Spartanburg Philharmonic and the Spartanburg Symphony Chorus. Her musical talents were shared through countless solo, ensemble, and choral performances with the Converse Opera Theater, Spartanburg Little Theatre, the First Presbyterian Church Choir, and the First Presbyterian Church Chamber Singers.

Her love of music extended beyond the concert stage. She faithfully helped lead First Presbyterian Church's Children's Music Program, volunteered with numerous community organizations, and generously shared her gift of song at retirement communities, baptisms, weddings, funerals, and celebrations of every kind. For PattyAnn, no stage was ever too large—or too small—when there was an opportunity to touch someone's heart through music.

Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband of 54 years, Dr. Marvin Hevener, M.D.; her beloved sons, David Hevener and Andrew Hevener; her daughter-in-law, Brooke Frazer; and her faithful canine companion, Louie.

In addition to her parents, PattyAnn was preceded in death by her brothers, Ben Garst and Larry Garst.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the physicians, respiratory therapists, and nursing staff of Spartanburg Regional Restorative Care for the exceptional compassion, care, and support they provided. Your kindness meant more to our family than words can express.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the First Presbyterian Church on East Main Street.
