Odus James Miller, 93, of Spartanburg and a 63-year resident of Morristown, TN., died Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Spartanburg, he was born on August 25, 1929, a son of the Late Thomas Sumter and Maza Leila Horton Miller and husband of the late Shirley Hileman Miller.
A graduate of Spartanburg High School, where he played football and earned the nickname “Footsie”, Odus graduated from Carson Newman College with a BA degree in History and Mathematics and masters degree from the University of Tennessee. He worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company in Spartanburg. Following his graduation from Carson Newman College, he began his teaching career at Whitesburg High School, Morristown High School and Cocke County High School. He also worked for American Enka Company.
He is survived by three nieces, Ann Daniel, Charlotte Jones and Joyce McDowell; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Miller; and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, John William Miller and Thomas Sumter Miller, Jr. and a nephew, Thomas Floyd Miller.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, August 13, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by the Rev. Grover Timms.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carson Newman College, 1646 Russell Avenue, Jefferson City, TN 37760.
