Nathaniel Compton Toms II, affectionately known as “Nate the Great,” entered eternal peace September 25, 2026, at age 90 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born July 27, 1936, in Morristown, New Jersey, and grew up in Burlington, North Carolina.

Nate and his wife, Becky, moved their family to Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1974. Spartanburg remained his home for the rest of his life. He loved golf and the friendships he made at Tom McAllister’s golf shop at The Country Club of Spartanburg. He also enjoyed many a happy hour at Dudley’s where he developed life long bonds with many special people. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. To have known him, would be to adore him and enjoy his sense of humor and charisma.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca Hartis Toms, of 69 years; his children, Cathy Toms Mason and her husband, Barry, Susan Toms Jennings, Wesley Jennings, Nathaniel Compton “Nate” Toms III and his wife, Lorrie; his sister, Natalie Hoffmaster. He is also survived by his grandchildren, David Fisher Mason, Mathew Toms Mason, Sarah Mason Cleveland and her husband, Daniel, Wesley Teague Jennings, Mary Catherine Jennings, Rebecca Kate Toms, and Nathaniel Compton Toms IV; his great-grandchildren, Walker Joseph Cleveland and Blakely Rose Cleveland; his devoted caregiver and special family friend, Jessie White and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edna Lancaster Toms and Nathaniel Stuart Toms; his brother, Stuart Toms; and his grandson, Joseph Barry Mason, Jr.

The family is grateful for the compassionate care Nate received from Family Hospice, Mountain View Nursing Home, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System—especially Casey, the charge nurse and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Hospice Home, especially Stephanie Pitts, NP, and the entire team.

In keeping with Nate’s wishes, no formal service will be held. The family will gather privately. Those wishing to honor his memory may consider a donation to one of the organizations that cared for him.
