Michael (Mike) Sloan Horton, 71, passed away peacefully at home in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on April 30, 2026.
Born on June 1, 1954, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Mike was raised in Salisbury, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Samuel Reid Horton, Jr and the late Anne Sloan Horton. He was also preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law: Chip and Donnell Horton.
Mike was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather (Pops). He shared 45 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sherri Rountree Horton. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Claire Apple (Derrick), and his son, Conor Horton (Crystal). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Amelia and Zachary Apple, and Madelynn and Collins Horton.
Mike graduated from West Rowan High School in Salisbury, North Carolina, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from UNC Charlotte. He spent many years working in the family business, A.T. Sloan & Sons Furniture, until its closing in 2000. He later continued his career as a sales representative with Liberty Furniture, where he formed lasting friendships and valued relationships that meant a great deal to him.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—camping with his wife in state and national parks covering the 48 contiguous states, playing golf, and most of all, spending time with friends and family. While he enjoyed many hobbies, it was the camaraderie and friendships that truly mattered to him.
Mike was a man of strong character who believed in doing the right thing and treating others with kindness and respect. He had a gift for making people laugh and was known for his sense of humor and his willingness to help anyone in need. Above all, he was most proud of his family.
He lived out his values through quiet generosity and a belief in simple acts of kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held May 16 at 1:00 p.m. at the Wilkins House, 5375 North Main Street, Cowpens, SC 29330.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
