Michael Charles Ellwanger

November 8, 1946 — November 19, 2023

Spartanburg, SC

Mike Ellwanger, 77, passed away on November 19, 2023, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a brief period of illness. He is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Peggy Ford Ellwanger of Spartanburg, South Carolina; daughter Amy Willbanks, her husband Charlie, and their sons Chap and Gabe of Spartanburg, South Carolina; daughter Jill Kunisawa and her husband Eric of Spartanburg, South Carolina; son Drew Ellwanger of Taos, New Mexico; and son Robby Ellwanger of Moloaa, Kauai, Hawaii.

Mike was born in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from North High School in 1965. He was a United States Army veteran with a tour of duty in the Vietnam War from 1966-1968. When he returned home, he obtained education at The Ohio State University and Franklin University, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He worked in finance and IT for 37 years with Owens-Corning Fiberglas, which brought him to South Carolina in 1987 to help launch the company’s new Duncan plant. He retired as Plant Controller and Acting Plant Manager of the facility.

Mike had a lifetime love of nature and the outdoors which he shared with his family. His kids and grandkids spent their lives exploring with him from the mountains to the sea. He found his most beloved unspoiled place in 1972 while honeymooning with Peggy at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Outer Banks, North Carolina. They spent weeks there every year since, and it is where he will take his final rest in a private family service.

The Ellwangers are eternally thankful for the outpouring of love and support from family and friends. Mike’s favorite charity was Disabled American Veterans and donations may be made in his memory in lieu of flowers.
