Mattie Mae Melton Blackwelder, 95, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, April 4, 2016, at Alpha Health Care, Greer, SC. Born March 2, 1921, in Cowpens, SC, she was the daughter of the late Joe Miles Melton and Ethel Lovelace Melton and widow of Charles William Blackwelder. She retired from Spartan Mills and was a member of Fairview Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are her sons, Donald Gerald Blackwelder (Anne) of Spartanburg, SC, Charles W. Blackwelder Jr. (Renee) of Greenville, SC, and Rev. Joe Lee Blackwelder (Deanne) of Kingstree, SC; grandchildren, Laura Putman, Chip Blackwelder, Donna McNamara, Joshua Blackwelder, Matthew Blackwelder, and Sam Blackwelder; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Debbie Johnson; brothers, Joe Melton and Paul Melton; and sister, Ebber Beecy. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 6, 2016, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Tim Hackett. Visitation will follow at the graveside. Memorials may be made to Fairview Freewill Baptist Church, 2058 Chesnee Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or a charity of one's choice.
