Obituary

Martha Phillips Thomason, 83, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, entered her heavenly home on Monday. October 5, 2026.

Martha was born in Royston, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Weldon Thomas Phillips and the late Lillian Brooks Phillips. She was also preceded in death by her late husband: James Thomason, Sr.: a son: James Thomason, Jr.; and a brother: Thomas Phillips.

Martha was a graduate of Cowpens High School, Anderson Junior College, and Furman University. She was always seeking knowledge and continued her education at the University of South Carolina where she earned her Master of Education Degree in Early Childhood Education and an Education Specialist Degree in Administration. She had a very successful and rewarding career as an educator with the school district 3 that lasted 32 years. She still had a desire to further her education and earned an Education Specialist degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Converse College. At the age of seventy-one, she completed the four-year Carolina Spiritual Science Center course study. She impacted so many lives along her life’s journey, and her life was a service to others.

In her spare time, she loved to travel and spend time with her family and friends. She loved the peaceful setting of the mountains in western North Carolina. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed making entrees in her journal. She will be remembered for her “Beautiful Pride” and always was fashionably dressed. She will be greatly missed by everyone that had the pleasure of meeting her.

Left to cherish Martha’s wonderful memories are her children: Caroline Gunnells (Stephen), Audrey Hope (Christian), Scott Thomason (Kim), and Theresa Thomason (Resa); a brother: James “Jimmy” Phillips; grandchildren: Abigail White (Weston), Griffin Rogers, McCall Hope, Trey Hope (Justin), and Eric Hope (Kathy), one great grandchild: Lainey Mae Cooper White; a niece: Paige Eckels (Austin); a great nephew: Thomas Eckels; and a great niece: Lillian Eckels.
