Margaret Whitesides Williams Lesslie, 98, of Spartanburg, SC, entered her eternal rest on September 4, 2025. She was born on August 26, 1927, in Lesslie, SC, and was predeceased by her beloved husband of 56 years, Reese Wylie Lesslie.
She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Lesslie Quiney; her son, R. Wylie Lesslie, Jr. (Dr. Margaret Rittenbury); grandchildren John F. Quiney III, Max Lesslie (Stephanie), Elisabeth Devine (Matthew), and Julia Margaret Van Zile; and five great-grandchildren.
Margaret grew up in the Neely’s Creek community and received a bachelor’s degree from Winthrop University and master’s degrees from both Winthrop and Converse Universities. She began her teaching career at Thornwell Orphanage in Clinton, SC, and later taught in Patuxent River, MD, and Columbia, SC, before completing her career as a third-grade teacher at Mary H. Wright Elementary School.
A lifelong member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, Margaret faithfully served her church through women’s ministries at both the local and Presbyterial levels, as a Sunday School and Bible school teacher, and in numerous other ways. Her servant’s heart extended beyond the church, as she dedicated 26 years to delivering Mobile Meals and volunteered with Total Ministries during her retirement.
She will be remembered for her sweet but determined spirit, her ability to persevere through challenges, and her unwavering kindness. As a wife, mother, teacher, and servant, she brought her talents, compassion, and strength to every role she held. She touched many lives with her generosity and willingness to help others.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Terra Bella and Family Hospice for their loving care of Margaret.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at Neely’s Creek ARP Church, Rock Hill, SC, on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 2:00 PM (974 Neely’s Creek Rd, Rock Hill, SC 29730), with Rev. L. Calvin Draffin officiating. Burial will follow at Neely’s Creek Cemetery, after which the family will receive visitors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Skylyn Drive Presbyterian Church, 1801 Skylyn Dr, Spartanburg, SC 29307 or to Neely’s Creek ARP Church 974 Neely’s Creek Rd, Rock Hill SC 29730.
