Mackechnie

Starts at 1:00 pm (Eastern time)
Linda Allen Mackechnie, lovingly known as “GaGa,” was born on February 16, 1950, in Morgantown, West Virginia. She passed away Saturday, August 15 2026, surrounded by loved ones, held in the same love she spent her life giving so freely to others.
Adopted by her aunt and raised in Huntsville, Alabama, Linda grew up in the care of Virgil and Gwendolyn Allen, whose guidance and devotion helped shape her gentle spirit and lifelong commitment to helping others. From an early age, Linda possessed a natural warmth and empathy that would become the foundation of her life’s work.
Linda dedicated her career to education, touching countless lives with her compassion, expertise, and unwavering belief in the potential of every child. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Alabama in May 1972, followed by a Master’s in Education from Auburn University in August 1975. Over the course of her distinguished career, she achieved board certifications in Special Education Emotional Disability (EMD), Special Education Visual Impairment, Special Education Transition to Maturity (TMD), Special Education Deafness and Hearing Impairment, Elementary Supervisor, Elementary Principal, and Superintendent—an extraordinary testament to her dedication and breadth of knowledge.
During her long career in Special Education, Linda served in many roles across South Carolina at the Charles Lee Center and later at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB). Among the many hats she wore while at SCSDB, she served as Principal of the School for the Blind and as Special Education Director. Her leadership was marked by empathy, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to ensuring that every student received the support, dignity, and opportunity they deserved. To many students she was Mrs. Mack, and to some she was a lifelong mentor, and helped many to lead fulfilling lives despite their disabilities. Her influence continues to live on in the programs she strengthened, the educators she mentored, and the families she supported.
Linda’s devotion to children extended far beyond her professional life. She and her husband, Al, were foster parents for ten years, opening their home and hearts to young people in need of stability, compassion, and care. During this time, they adopted their daughter Candice, a blessing that enriched their lives and deepened their family’s bond. Linda’s belief in the power of love, safety, and opportunity for every child guided her both at home and in her work.
After being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2009, Linda retired from education, but she never stopped serving others. Her generosity continued throughout the community through her many years with the Lions Club International and through Dreams Do Come True, a foundation she founded to support local youth and help them access opportunities that might otherwise have been out of reach. She also ran an online business, GaGa’s Glitters, where she resold items and created handmade jewelry, each piece reflecting her care and creative spirit.
She also was a gifted storyteller and creator, Linda authored several books, including a tribute to Evelyn Mackechnie, The Mackechnie Family Cookbook, and a fictional series entitled World Within World. She also coauthored The Beale Saga with Gale Garret, Al’s best friend which was published posthumously in 2025. Her writing reflected her imagination, her curiosity, and her desire to preserve stories that mattered.
Beyond her many accomplishments, Linda’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Al Mackechnie; her daughters, Candice Basham, Elizabeth “Libby” Mackechnie, and Robynn Butler and her husband, Barry; her grandchildren, Sara (11), Samantha (10), and Allan (8), who adored their GaGa; and her siblings, Bill, Patricia, Elsie, and Peggy. She was predeceased by her brother, David Allen, whose spouse is Beverly.
Linda’s home was a place of welcome and warmth—filled with laughter, encouragement, and the quiet reassurance of her steady presence. She had a gift for making others feel seen and valued, offering comfort without judgment and love without condition. Her legacy is one of kindness, service, creativity, and deep devotion to the people she cherished.
A memorial service honoring Linda’s life will be held at J.F. Floyd’s Mortuary in Boiling Springs, South Carolina, on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. A brief reception with the family will follow the service. All who knew and loved her are warmly invited to attend and celebrate her remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the following organizations, both deeply meaningful to Linda and her life’s work:
