Lige William Mathis, Jr., 95, of Boiling Springs, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by those who loved him the most. Lige was born September 14, 1930, in Campobello, SC, a son of the late Rebecca Estelle Watson Mathis and Lige William Mathis, Sr.
Lige was a graduate of University of Southern Mississippi and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was retired after 21 years of service with Northrop Grumman Corporation, a company that designed and manufactured aerospace systems and technology.
Traveling to the islands and the beach were two of Lige’s favorite pastimes that brought him immense joy and happiness.
Surviving is his loving husband and companion of 62 years, Jerry I. Sipkin; his faithful feline companion, Mr. Kitty; a nephew, Bobby Christopher (Donna); two nieces, Norma Williams and Lynn Lancaster; and a host of extended family members and great friends.
The family will gather to receive friends from 1:00-1:45 pm Monday, July 13, 2026, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Military Honors, provided by the U.S. Navy Honors Team, will follow at 2:00 p.m.
Lige’s family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the wonderful staff of Gentiva Hospice, who surrounded Lige and Jerry with love and compassion, treating them just like family and to Lige’s caregiver, Shawnee Butler.
