Leslie (Les) Stewart Dyer

Leslie Stewart Dyer (Les) passed away on April 24, 2023 in Lexington, South Carolina and he was 98 years old. Leslie was the son of Thomas Alfred Dyer of Belper, Derbyshire, England, UK and Vivien Mills of Kilburn, Derbyshire. He was born in Kilburn, Derbyshire in 1924.

 

He is survived by his three daughters; Angela Fry, Julie Coyle and Carole Hall, together with three grandchildren; Kristen Fry, Sean Fry and Katy Hall and four great grandchildren; Kolton Southerland, Crosby Fry, Maya Fry and Legend Kirkland; all residing in the United States. Les spent 29 wonderful years with his beloved Patricia Ann Rubel. The majority of the Dyer family are still residing in England.

 

Les graduated with a London Engineering Degree and was also an Associate Member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. His working career included being a Research Engineer on British Railways and also a Project Manager with ICI. In 1964 he was sent to New York for a year to be ICI’s Project Manager on a Nylon plant project. Les returned to England for two years and then emigrated to the USA with his wife and three daughters in 1966 to work for Dow Badische, first in Williamsburg, VA and then in Anderson, SC. In 1975 he moved to Spartanburg, SC to join Lockwood Greene Engineers as a Project Manager, later to become Chief Engineer and Director of Projects. He was a registered Professional Engineer and a member of the Project Management Institute, also lecturing at Greenville Tech on project management. His working career took him to work for short intervals in Germany, France, Morocco and Taiwan. In England, Les played mainly soccer in addition to tennis and golf. In the USA, he continued to play tennis and golf, playing the latter until he was 86. He continued his interest in soccer by being one of the first members of the new American Youth Soccer Organization as a coach, teacher, and referee over a five-year period. While in Anderson he joined the Sertoma Club, and was also a member of Grace Episcopal Church. In Spartanburg, he was a member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church.

 

 A memorial service will be held at St. Christopher’s Church, 400 Dupre Dr., Spartanburg, SC 29307, at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 20, 2023, conducted by the Reverend Beth Hendrix, Vicar. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall after the service.
