Leonidas “Leon” Lempesis Campbell, 75, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023. Born in Atlanta, GA, he was the son of the late William and Julia Lempesis Campbell.
A U.S. Army veteran, who served a tour of duty in Vietnam and was honorably discharged, Leon earned a bachelor’s degree in 1969 from Emory University and a Juris-Doctor degree from the University of Georgia Law School in 1976. Leon was an Attorney of Law, practicing in Atlanta, GA from 1973 until moving to Spartanburg in 1983, where he continued to practice. He was a member of the Spartanburg County Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar Association, and The Order of Barristers. He was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, where every year he led church tours that were very informative and appreciated by all. He was a truly compassionate man, a gentleman to all, and his sense of humor will be missed by all. Some of his accolades include United States Court of Appeals, member of the Georgia Bar Association, Supreme Court of Appeals in the state of Georgia and Moot Court Board at the University of Georgia School of Law. He has been a member of the S.C. Bar since 1982.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 47 years, Helen Diamond Campbell; brother, Basil Campbell (Sky) of Atlanta; nieces and nephews that he loved dearly, nephews, James C. Diamond, Jr., Steven S. Diamond (Victoria), Richard J. Diamond and Demetri Campbell; nieces, Angela M. Diamond, Angela Joiner, and Julia Ashworth (Jay); great-nieces, Abigail Diamond and Campbell Ashworth; and great-nephews, Cole Diamond, Samuel Diamond, Bobby Diamond, Jack Diamond and Graham Diamond. He was predeceased by a brother, Costa Campbell and sister, Kula Campbell Moore.
Visitation will be at 10:00 am on Friday, January 27, 2023 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 697 Asheville Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29303. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am at the church, conducted by The Rev. George F. Nayfa. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
