Karen Kay Hughes, 76, of Roebuck, SC, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2026, at Spartanburg Medical Center after an extended illness. Karen was born and raised in Cheyenne, WY, and was the eldest daughter of the late Marie E. Frazier Hughes and Melvin Hughes.

Karen graduated from Cheyenne East High School in Cheyenne, WY in 1967. She moved to Colorado Springs, CO in 1973 and returned to Cheyenne, WY in 1981. Karen moved to Lyman, SC in 2023, and in 2026 she moved to Roebuck, SC, to spend her remaining years with her son, grandson, her beloved cat, Spunky, and her Carolina family.

Karen retired in 1998 from US West Communications after 31 years of service as a Customer Service Representative. After retirement, she spent 24 years as a Sales Representative for Avon. Karen loved going to automobile races and making trips to attend family reunions. She was a Lifetime Member of the Wyoming Auto Racing Club.

Along with her parents, Karen was predeceased by her brother, John E. Hughes and her best friend, Sandy Frith.

Surviving is her son, Mike Hughes; her grandson, Mike Hughes, Jr.: her sister, Joy Hughes’ her niece, Shelley Morton (Tim); her nephews, Shawn Fisher (Nicole) and John Hughes, (Teresa McCarter); great nieces and nephews, Sage, Kyle, Alexia, Jordyn and Mia; her much beloved cat, Spunky; and her Carolina family, Greg and Melissa Carroll, Casey Carroll (Peyton and Karsyn), J and Micah Falconer (Mallory and Izzy), Heath Carroll, Taylor Carroll and Josh Davidson.

In keeping with her wishes, Karen has been cremated. A private service will be held in Cheyenne, WY, at a later date. For information, please contact Mike Hughes for details.
