Judith Ann (Judy) Casey Bishop, 89, of Spartanburg passed on Monday, September 16th at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. A native of Spartanburg, she was born on July 3, 1935, a daughter of the late Robert James and Tressie Lucretia Compton Casey.
Judy graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1953, Spartanburg Junior College, and completed her education at Converse College with a degree in education in 1957. She began her teaching career at Pacolet High School as an English teacher. While her husband JD was in the Army, she taught elementary school in Elgin, OK, and upon returning to Spartanburg, she returned to Pacolet High for several years before finishing her teaching career at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind. She went on to work for the Spartanburg County Department of Social Services, eventually retiring in 1994 as the Manager of the Spartanburg County Child Development Centers.
She was a lifelong member of El Bethel United Methodist Church, serving the church as a member of the United Methodist Women, the Seniors in Action, and as a volunteer in countless other capacities.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, James Dillard (JD) Bishop; son, Jamie Bishop (Kerry) of Spartanburg; daughter, Teresa Bishop Pazur (Scott) of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Katie Pazur, Emily Pazur and Maggie Pazur. She was predeceased by her siblings, Bob Casey, Mickie Cox, Mike Casey and Ronnie Casey.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2024, from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 in the chapel conducted by the Rev. Jack Caldwell and Rev. Phillip Park. Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Love Fund at El Bethel United Methodist Church, 820 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
