Joseph Crayton Byers, 95, of 1705 Skylyn Drive, formerly of Halifax, VA, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Skylyn Place. Born May 24, 1914, in Cherokee County, SC, he was the son of the late David Edward and Leola Camp Byers and the husband of the late Lucy Holt Byers. A graduate of Blacksburg High School, he was a retired tobacco farmer. He was a member of Union Grove CME Church of South Boston, VA, where he was a choir member and taught Sunday School for over 35 years. He was a founding member of the Ruritan Club in Halifax, VA, Commander of the South Boston DAV Post Chapter 53, and a U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran. Survivors include a sister, Rebecca Gregg of Oklahoma; a sister-in-law, Hallie Hankins of Ingram, VA; seven nephews, Woodie Hankins of Ingram, VA, James Byers of South Boston, VA, Glenn Gregg of Derby, KS, Wayne Roberts of Williamsburg, VA, Roy D. Marrs and his wife Betty Jo of Roebuck, SC, David Byers, III and his wife Joan of Spartanburg, SC, and William Holt, Jr. of Pennsylvania; and nine nieces, Betty Creswell Donaldson of Rockingham, NC, Patricia Sanford Chilcote of Charleston, SC, Carolyn Creswell McCurry of Grover, SC, Janice Byers Singh of Brunswick, GA, Jane Moore of Ingram, VA, Kay Stevens of Swansboro, NC, Joan Harrison of Surry, VA, Suzanne Gabster of Navarre, FL, and Becky Mackey of Slidell, LA. Visitation will be 7:00-8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston, VA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Powell Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Maxine Crenshaw. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Union Grove CME Church, 2105 Union Grove Road, South Boston, VA 24592.
