Joel Flynn Elliott, 83, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2025, in Spartanburg, SC. Born on July 20, 1941, in Whitney, SC, he was the son of the late Tucker Green Elliott and Ila Blanton Elliott.
Joel proudly served as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, a testament to his commitment to his country and values. After returning from military service, Joel made significant contributions to the Spartanburg community through his career in law enforcement, as a retired Spartanburg Police Officer,
He was an alumnus of Wofford College, graduating in 1974 with a bachelor's degree, a proud achievement that reflected his dedication to education. A high school athlete, Joel excelled in football, baseball, and track, showing an early passion for sports that he carried into adulthood. Later in life, he maintained his love for fitness through weightlifting and bodybuilding.
Joel and his wife, Marlene were members of Glendale Baptist Church. He had a loving heart for animals, helping all that he could. He was a man of quiet demeanor who had a lot to say in the company of friends. His interests included avid reading, enjoying trips to the beach, and embarking on many memorable cruises.
Joel is survived by his loving daughter, Pamela Craig, and her husband William; granddaughter, Katie Mallinger; grandson, Read Williford and his wife Allison; and great-grandsons, Jackson and Harrison Mallinger. He is also survived by his sister, Sandy Jennings, and her husband Kenneth; brother, Maxie Elliott; and his dear sister-in-law and caregiver, Peggy Thomas. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Marlene Thomas Elliott, along with his parents and sister, Gloria Joan Elliott.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM, Wednesday, May 28, 2025, Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
The funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM, Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Burial with military honors will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Services will be conducted by The Rev. Keith Davis and The Rev. Andy Moore.

Joel Elliott lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a profound love for his family and community.
