Jean Guyton Buice

July 24, 1946 — August 14, 2025

Pacolet

Our hearts are broken as we share that Jean Guyton Buice, age 79, of Pacolet, entered the presence of her Savior on August 14, 2025, surrounded by her family who adored her more than anything in this world. Jean was not only a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend — she was the heart of her family, the one whose love, laughter, and warmth held everyone together.

Born on July 24, 1946, to the late Paul “Pug” and Bessie Guyton, Jean grew up in a loving, tight-knit family with her treasured siblings: Cathy Stroud (Terry), Judy Towery (Dan), Jan O’Sheilds (Buddy), Linda Hodge (Jimmy), Mike Guyton (Linda), and Bud Guyton, along with her special sister-in-law Frances. She was also blessed with several well-loved nieces and nephews who cherished their “Aunt Mildred/Mimi” and the way she made each of them feel uniquely special. She often said her greatest blessing in life was her family, and she proved it daily with her words, her care, and her unwavering presence.

From the moment she met her beloved Dennis “Denny” Joe Buice in the 9th grade, their hearts belonged to each other. For 60 years, they built a marriage filled with deep devotion, shared dreams, and countless memories. Together they raised their daughter, Heidi, and later welcomed their grandson, Zach — the light of Jean’s life. To Zach, she wasn’t just “Gaga,” she was his biggest fan, greatest encourager, and constant source of unconditional love.

Jean’s faith was the foundation of her life. Saved as a young girl by the loving guidance of a Sunday School teacher, she carried that moment in her heart and shared often how good the Lord had been to her. Her church family at Ben Avon Baptist meant so much to her, and she expressed her love in the sweetest way she knew — through her famous desserts. She especially loved her many friends in her WMU group and Wednesday Women, looking forward to each meeting and carefully choosing just the right recipe to share from her beloved cookbooks.

Her cooking was legendary — especially her Chocolate Delight, Blueberry Upside-Down Cake, and Peanut Butter Pie. Friends and family eagerly anticipated what she would bring to church potlucks, knowing it would be the most talked-about dish on the table.

She had a gift for making life beautiful — whether through her impeccable style with perfectly matched necklaces, earrings, shoes, and handbags, or her knack for finding “treasures” in thrift stores and giving them new life through painting, sewing, and crafting. Jean’s quick wit and humor were a joy to all, and even when she insisted she “wasn’t trying to be funny,” she could light up a room with laughter.

Though our hearts ache, we find peace in knowing she is now whole — walking without assistance, breathing freely, and wrapped in the arms of Jesus. We will miss her hugs, her voice, and her wit, but her love will live on in each of us.

Graveside services will be held at Pacolet Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at 12:00 PM, followed by a visitation. Services will be officiated by The Rev. Shep Bevis, The Rev. Richard King, and The Rev. Tommy Sparks.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ben Avon Baptist Church, 2437 Wallace Avenue, Spartanburg, SC.

To know her was to love her, and to be loved by her was one of life’s greatest blessings.
