James Edward Toney, 88, of Spartanburg, SC died Saturday, October 7, 2017 at RoseCrest Retirement Community. Born April 16, 1929 in Pacolet Mills, SC, he was the son of the late James Buford and Marie Fleming Toney. Ping played professional baseball and was an outstanding player with local textile leagues during his younger days. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg in which he was a deacon, usher, and anything that needed to be done for the Lord. He was an avid Notre Dame and Boston Red Sox fan, and loved to play golf. Mr. Toney graduated from Pacolet High School in 1946, attended Furman University, and was retired from Milliken & Co. after 40 years of service. Survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, Betty Ruth DuPre Toney; sons, Barry E. Toney (Jenny) of Spartanburg, SC; James Daryl Toney of LaGrange, GA; three grandchildren, Brad Toney (Kelly), Amelia Lorenz, Julia Barnstead (Scott); and great grandchildren, Cameron Toney, Taylor Toney, David Shortell, Mia Lorenz, Matthew Lorenz, Alexis Lorenz, Alex Johnson, Emma Barnstead, and Lucas Barnstead. He was also predeceased by sisters, Linda Frickert and Patsy Toney, and a brother, Larry Toney. Graveside service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 10, 2017 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
