James Overton Erwin III, age 85, of Richmond, VA, passed away on September 15, 2026. Born in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of John Watson Erwin and Katherine T. Erwin. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John Watson Erwin, Jr.
Overton was educated at Christ School in Arden, North Carolina, and the University of Virginia. He served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant and Platoon Leader in the Quartermaster Corps, supporting the 101st Airborne Division, and earned the Vietnam Service Medal. His business career included work in commercial banking, real estate, and insurance. After residing in Annapolis, MD, for nearly 30 years, he retired to Reedville, VA, in 2004.
Overton will be remembered for his independence, strong convictions, and ability to make ordinary moments memorable. He found great pleasure in sailing, hunting, and storytelling.
He was formerly married to Adela N. Rose of Annapolis, MD. He is survived by his children, Lane Erwin (John Myers) and James O. Erwin IV (Stephanie), and by his granddaughters, Amelia Erwin and Caroline Erwin.
A private service and interment will be held in Spartanburg, SC.
