Harold George, Sr.

November 18, 1927 — June 3, 2009

Harold Arthur George, Sr., 81, of 666 Overhill Drive, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at his home. Born November 18, 1927, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late John N. George, Sr. and Lucille Wheat George and the husband of the late LaVern Smith George. A 1945 graduate of Spartanburg High School, he was a retired superintendent with the Spartanburg Water System and a former partner with J. N. George and Son Plumbing Contractors. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church where he was a former Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a Mason and member of Whitney Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, past Captain of the Hejaz Shrine Band, Southeast Director of the Shriner's Association Band, Southeastern U.S. Champion of Micro-Midget Racing, and an auctioneer. A U.S. Army Veteran, he served in post World War II and the occupation of Japan. Survivors include two sons, Harold A. George, Jr. and Phillip Lee George; a sister, Peggy G. Brewington; a close friend, Elsie Teal; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, Bill George, Thomas George, and John George, Jr.; and three sisters, Nellie Gardner, Margaret Walker, and Anna Ruth Smith. Visitation will be 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Floyd's Boiling Springs Chapel. Graveside services with Masonic rites will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Memorial Park conducted by the Rev. Steven H. Rhodes. Following the service, the family will be at the home of Jim and Jackie George, 118 Penarth Road, Spartanburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605; or to Interim Hospice, 775 Spartan Boulevard, Suite 101, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
