George Jerry Hammock, 81, of Spartanburg, SC passed away Friday, May 20, 2022 at White Oak Estates surrounded by his family after an extended and courageous battle with Parkinson’s. Born September 19, 1940 in Ocala, FL, and spending his childhood in Moultrie, GA, he was the son of the late George W. and Mattie Logue Hammock.
Mr. Hammock was a graduate of Presbyterian College where he played football averaging over 50 minutes a game playing both offense and defense. He was also a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Following graduation, Jerry became a teacher and a coach at Chapman High School; became Purchasing Director at Beverage-Air, and later opened Hammock Electric, which he operated until he retired in the early 2000’s.
From a young age Jerry was an avid sportsman, spending hours in the woods of Georgia hunting or on the water fishing with his childhood friend Gene Stringfellow. His happiest moments were spent with his family and friends, watching his Clemson Tigers, enjoying annual beach trips, lounging by the pool, and watching westerns with his furry companions. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 45 years. Mr. Hammock was a person who never met a stranger and loved to help others. Jerry was a kind, humble man who adored his family with all his heart. Amazingly, he came through his 6-year battle with Parkinson’s with strength and courage never losing his good nature and sense of humor. Jerry was a blessing to all who had the privilege of sharing his life.
For 55 years, Jerry was happily married to his beloved wife Mary Adams Hammock, whom he affectionately called “Mopsy.” He was blessed with and survived by his two children Jeanne Elizabeth Hammock Gauthier (Gerard) and Jefferson Stewart Hammock (Amy) of Spartanburg, SC, three adored grandsons, Daniel Alexander “Alex” Rosser, Mark Gerard Gauthier IV, and George Adams Gauthier who lovingly called him “Poppi”, his sister, Joanne “Jody” Stewart, sister-in-law, Libby Adams Dym and brothers-in-law, Gene Adams (Brenda) and Jay Adams (Virginia), all of Spartanburg and many loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers-in-law, Marty Dym and Col. Tom Stewart.
A service and celebration of his life will be conducted at 4:00 pm Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by The Rev. Joanne R. Hull. Visitation will follow the service.
The family would like to express their appreciation to caregivers and staff of White Oak Estates for all the wonderful care that they provided.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greenville Area Parkinson Society, P.O. Box 6505 Greenville, SC 29606; Mobile Meals P.O. Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304 or the charity of your choice.
