G. R. "Chick" Wilkins, 95, of Spartanburg and formerly of Cowpens, SC, died Friday, December 15, 2017, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born August 18, 1922, in Cowpens, SC, he was the son of the late Ralph Shumpert Wilkins and Ida Gineta Moore Wilkins and husband of 56 years to the late Dorothy "Dot" Hazel Hammett Wilkins. A graduate of Cowpens High School and U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Wilkins loved God and his family. He was an amateur HAM radio operator and enjoyed square dancing, hunting, fishing, gardening, helping others, and studying his Bible daily. He retired from Southern Railway and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. Survivors include his son, Monte Wilkins (Mary) of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, Patricia, Cassidy, Carmen, and Melissa; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Eddie Wilkins of Cowpens, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and precious wife, he was predeceased by a loving daughter, Cheryl Lynn Wright; brothers, John and Bub Wilkins; and sister, Jenny Hill. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, December 17, 2017, in Daniel Morgan Memorial Gardens, 175 Cemetery St., Cowpens, SC 29330, by The Rev. Wayne Majors. Visitation will follow at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, PO Box 160, Cowpens, SC 29330.
