Elizabeth Bean

July 27, 1922 — June 7, 2009

Elizabeth Mae Evert (Liz) Bean, widow of Howard Carlisle Bean, died June 7, 2009, after a brief illness. Born July 27, 1922, in Baker, ND, she was the daughter of the late Harry S. and Maude C. Evert. She was a graduate of Bathgate High School and the University of North Dakota with a degree in Physical Education. After college, she enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was stationed in Corpus Christi, TX. As a Petty Officer, she taught instrument training to pilots during World War II. There she met Howard Carlisle Bean to whom she was married for 54 years until his death in 2000. After working in the library at the University of Virginia while Carlisle studied law, she retired to become a full time homemaker when they moved to Spartanburg. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, a circle member, a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was active in her garden club, the Shepherd's Center, and as a member of The Assembly. She is survived by her sons, William Smith Bean IV (Bill) and his wife Diane, Dr. Howard Carlisle Bean, Jr. (Budge) and his wife Martha, and a daughter, Elizabeth Bean Burrell (Betsy), all of Spartanburg; her brother, David M. Evert and his wife Myrna of Casper, WY; grandchildren, Elizabeth Bean Palmer and her husband Jason, Will Bean, Carlisle Bean, William Bean and his wife Jenni, Mary Caroline Bean, Martha Elizabeth Bean, John Burrell, and Andrew Burrell; and great-grandchildren, Whit and Laney Palmer. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son-in-law, Dr. Timothy Paul Burrell, and her grandson, Adam Carlisle Bean. The family would like to thank Nettie Whitner and all the ladies who were caregivers to Mrs. Bean for their devotion and kindness to her. The family will receive friends at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Howard Bean, Jr., 301 South Pine Street, on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. David A. Renwick and the Rev. Susan E. Moorefield. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; Young Life for Adam Bean Frontier Scholarship, P. O.
