Elford Fortenberry

Elford "Bud" Houston Fortenberry, 90, of 254 Old John Dodd Road, went home to be with the Lord on May 9, 2009, at his home. Born October 16, 1918, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late Ed and Mary West Fortenberry and husband for sixty years to the late Minnie Bell Fortenberry. He was retired from Arkwright Mills after thirty nine years of service and a member of Arkwright Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Annette Lockhart Fortenberry; a son, Alton Bernard Fortenberry and his wife Ann of Spartanburg; John Steadings of Pauline (a nephew who was raised by Minnie Bell and Bud); three granddaughters, Candy Zeigler and her husband Heyward of Branchville, Cookie Cudd and her husband Ronald of Spartanburg, and Cindy Sherbert and her husband Allan of Spartanburg; a step-son, Chad Bridges and his wife Elaine of Boiling Springs; two great-grandsons, Ron Garrett and Chad Cudd; three great-granddaughters, Summer Garrett, Kacie Cudd, and Brittany Sherbert; three step- great-grandsons, Chris, Heyward L., and William Zeigler; one great-great-grandson, John Michael Garrett; two step-great-great-grandsons, L. T. and C. D. Zeigler; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to give much love and thanks to a special niece, Joyce Juanita Hammett. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Curtis Daniel and the Rev. Henry Guyton. The family will receive friends at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elford H. Fortenberry Memorial Fund, P. O. Drawer 1530, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
