Robert D. Wootton, M.D., 88, passed peacefully into the presence of God on April 8th, 2026, surrounded by his beloved wife and his children. Dan, as he was known to friends and family, served the Upstate of South Carolina as a pediatrician for nearly 30 years. Prior to setting up his private practice in Spartanburg, SC, Dr. Wootton was stationed at Camp LeJuene, North Carolina, where he served in the United States Navy Medical Corps. He completed his residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit Michigan, after graduating from Wayne State University Medical School in Detroit. He was working at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan when he was commissioned a lieutenant in the United States Navy.
Dan met his beloved wife, Nancy, a student at Albion College, when he was at Wayne State. They were married on December 19th, 1959. They had four children-Martha, Robert, Ruth Ann, and Catherine. Dan and Nancy were blessed with eight grandchildren- Michael, Evan, Spencer, Lauren, Will, Charlie, Grace, and Abigail, and one great-grandchild- Louie Daniel.
Dr. Wootton enjoyed going to their mountain house in Linville, NC, and loved working in his yard. He was a long-suffering Detroit Lions fan, a devoted Red Wings fan and an avid Gamecock fan. He loved sipping Vernor’s Ginger Ale while watching his Detroit sports teams, tailgating to Carolina games, and particularly relished running into former patients he cared for at his private practice.
Dan also loved singing hymns of praise at the churches he attended throughout his long life. After becoming a Christian during a Michigan summer camp at an early age, he found himself drawn, again-and-again, to the study of the Bible. Any trip to his home would find books upon books lining his shelves in his study. He found solace in music and often remarked at the intricacies of a symphony, stomped his foot to the Canadian Brass, or sang along with his favorite songs.
Dan and Nancy had many Cocker Spaniels during their married life, which Dan loved dearly. Their most recent dog, however, held a very special place in his heart. Bonnie, a gift from one of his grandchildren, could be brought into every conversation (yes, every…single…conversation) and “Papa” could be found each night talking to his Bonnie, rubbing her belly, and telling her how special she was to him and how much they both loved her.
Dan Wootton spent his Sundays over the last 30 years at Providence Presbyterian, serving as an elder and singing at various times. He loved his Lord above all and longed to be in His presence.
