Dr. Bartel, Jr.

Dr. Frank Bartel, 88, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, February 19, 2016 at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born January 27, 1928 in Raleigh, NC, he was the son of the late Frank Octave Bartel, Sr. and Amy Edmester Lynde Bartel. Dr. Bartel was a graduate of Duke University and The Medical University of South Carolina. He was chief resident at the University of Miami School of Medicine before starting a pediatrics practice in Spartanburg, where he found his life's calling bringing healing to sick children for 37 years. He served as a Captain in the United States Air Force for two years and belonged to many organizations, including Sons of the American Revolution and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was a member of the The Episcopal Church of the Advent. He was an avid golfer, swimmer and enjoyed playing Bridge. Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Splawn Bartel; two children, Margaret Louise Bartel (husband, Jeff Ziolkowski) of Rancho Cucamonga, CA and son, Dr. Frank Octave Bartel, III; and nephew, Robert Dalton Ketchie (wife, Faye Brannon Ketchie) of Lexinton, NC. He was also predeceased by his sister, Marguerite "Pinky" Lynde Ketchie. Visitation will be 4:00 - 6:00 PM Sunday, February 21, 2016 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Monday, February 22, 2016 at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent St., Spartanburg, SC 29302. Private committal will follow.
