Connie Key

April 18, 1966 — February 4, 2023

Spartanburg, SC

Connie J. Key, 56, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at MUSC, after a short illness. Born April 18, 1966 to Thomas C. Key, Sr. and Irene Key.

The youngest child and only daughter of six children, she grew up mainly in Cowpens, SC, where she attended school. Always first in everything, she graduated Valedictorian at Broome High School in 1984, then attended her beloved Wofford College on scholarships from Spartanburg County Foundation and Wofford College. She graduated in 1988 Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Biology. She was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Wofford. After college she attended MUSC where she received a BS in Physical Therapy in 1990.

Afterwards, she was inpatient Physical Therapy Director at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for 15 years. After her health declined in 2005 from Type 1 diabetes, she received a pancreas kidney transplant. After her father’s death in 2001, she lived in the home with her mother until her passing in 2018. They were a team in all respects.

Until her death, she lived independently with night caregivers. They were also her friends. She loved company, especially family gatherings. She openly admitted her nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews were Her Favorites. She personified that “Aunts, like Mom, only cooler.”

Sports were her passion, from scorekeeper for Wofford basketball to her beloved Panthers and Braves. She always attended any events she could and rooted for her teams.

She loved the outdoors and gardening. She went on many trips with family. Her happy place was the beach. She was a longtime member of Hammett Grove Baptist where she and her mother taught Sunday School. More recently, she attended Northgate Freewill Baptist Church with her sister-in-law, Johnnie. She committed to Christ as a child and remained faithful in life.

Survivors include her brothers, Dr. Thomas Key (Mary) of Orangeburg, SC, Danny Key (Boyne) of Christiansburg, Virginia, Larry Key (Johnnie) of Wellford, SC, Dr. Timothy Key (Wanda) of Sumter, SC, Jamie Key (Barbara) of Charlotte, NC; 11 nieces and nephews and 16 precious and spoiled great nieces and nephews.
