Edwin Dalton Rivers, 89, of Spartanburg, SC died Monday, February 27, 2023 at Summit Hills. Born November 28, 1933 in Chesterfield, SC, he was the son of the late Edwin and Nell Rivers and was the husband of the late Barbara Ann Miller Rivers for 63 years.
A U.S. Army Reserve veteran, Mr. Rivers was a graduate of Chesterfield High School and graduate of Clemson University where he played football for Coach Frank Howard, playing in the 1957 Orange Bowl.
Dalton was a longtime teacher and coach for Lancaster High School (1959 State Champions), Byrnes High School (1976 State Champions) and Broome High School. He moved to Thomson, Georgia where he continued to teach and coach at Harlem High School.
An avid rabbit hunter, he was a member of the CSRA Beagle Club and raised Championship Beagles. Watching the Atlanta Braves was another favorite pastime.
Dalton was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Evans, Georgia.
Survivors include his sons, Stephen Rivers (Juli) of Spartanburg, SC and Eric Rivers (Melissa) of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Benjamin Rivers, Caroline Rivers, Alexandra Rivers, Erica Rivers, Lauren Rivers, Lindsey Rivers; and his sister, Jean Rivers Westbrook (Grier).
Entombment will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 12, 2023 at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by The Rev. Peter Waid. Visitation will follow at the Heritage Chapel Mausoleum.
