Bruton Powell Redding

October 28, 1948 — November 18, 2022

Spartanburg

Bruton Powell Redding, age 73, a native of Spartanburg, passed away on November 16, 2022, in hospital in Anderson, S.C., of complications from a genetic kidney disease. He was the son of the late Charlotte Hopkins Redding and the late Russell F. Redding, Sr.

In his early teen years, Bruton enjoyed woodworking, and building and racing soap box derby cars. He competed in the official “Soap Box Derby” held in Charlotte, N.C., and his car was awarded the title of Best Engineered Car. Bruton was a 1967 graduate of Spartanburg High School where he enjoyed running track as well as playing bass in the orchestra.

In 1971, he earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, where, in 1976, he also attained a Master of Accountancy degree. He then opened a specialty mattress store, Mattresses Plus, in Spartanburg. It was the first store of its kind in the area. Later, he had branch stores in Greenville, Mauldin, and Gaffney. His last store was located in Spartanburg, in an older building, which he bought and renovated. He enjoyed being a part of the revitalization efforts going on in the downtown area.

He had a good sense of humor, always trying to make people laugh. In the middle years of his life, he fought a difficult battle with kidney disease. Often hospitalized, he kept a cheerful and brave demeanor, usually bringing a smile to the faces of hospital staff. He was fortunate to receive a kidney transplant in 1990, and he lived with the transplant until his death. For several years, he maintained written correspondence with the family of the donor, expressing his gratitude for their gift of life. At his request, Bruton’s body was donated for the purpose of medical research to the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, S.C.

He was survived by his brother, Russell Frederick Redding, Jr. (deceased in March 2025) and is survived by his sister-in-law, Rebecca Rogers Redding, his two nephews, Alan Russell Redding, M.D., and David Rogers Redding, M.D. and David’s wife, Angela Pierce Redding, M.D., and great-niece, Alice, great-nephew, Russell, all of Atlanta, Ga.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens on October 25,2025, at 10:00 A.M. The family requests that any donations be made to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation (PKD) Foundation, P.O. Box 871847, Kansas City, MO., 64189, pkdcure.org.
